Committed to sustainability every step of the way, Nespresso aims to
not only deliver a gourmet coffee experience, but also a meaningful one from bean to cup and beyond. To encourage Club Members to be part of the journey to sustainability, Nespresso has launched a number of activations to encourage capsule recycling and to raise awareness of the benefits of responsible consumption.
Sharing a common commitment to responsible consumption, this year Nespresso Hong Kong
continues its partnership with food rescue and assistance charity Food Angel. This year, Nespresso has pledged to make a monthly donation of vegetables to Food Angel to help those in need in the local community. The vegetables are grown with recycled Nespresso coffee grounds at a farm in the New Territories managed by Nespresso’s local recycling partner. Furthermore, the proceeds from every recycling bag (HK$0.5 each) sold to Club Members this year will also be donated to Food Angel. In addition, from now until 1 st July 2018, Nespresso will provide one hot meal box to a beneficiary within Food Angel’s network when Club Members recycle a bag of 30 used capsules or more.
Nespresso Hong Kong also continues its Nespresso Pass Program in 2018. Each Club Member is
provided with a passport to collect stamps for the redemption of rewards. The Pass helps Club
Members navigate and discover unique coffee moments as well as experience how recycling is part of this journey. Throughout 2018, Club Members can collect one recycling stamp every time they return a bag of over 30 used capsules, and collect coffee stamps for the purchase of specific coffees. On collection of one recycling stamp along with three coffee stamps, Club Members will receive a surprise gift. To redeem a premium gift, Club Members will need to collect three recycling stamps along with five coffee stamps.
“Sustainability is a core value for Nespresso. We acknowledge that we have a significant role to play in bringing about a sustainable coffee economy and consumer participation is essential in achieving a collaborative recycling effort. We aim to show our Club Members how they can make a tangible difference to the environment and local communities by recycling their used capsules,” says Lai Ching Kok, Business Executive Officer, Nespresso Hong Kong and Macau. “At Nespresso, we believe that your coffee moment doesn’t end until you recycle your capsules. Our partnership with Food Angel highlights our common goal to raise awareness of the benefits of responsible consumption, and we encourage Club Members to join us in giving a second life to used capsules.”
Creating A Second Life
Food Angel rescues edible surplus food from different sectors of the food industry to prepare nutritious hot meals for underprivileged communities in Hong Kong. Similarly, Nespresso gives a second life to its used capsules, which are made of aluminium – an infinitely recyclable material. Once collected by Nespresso, used capsules are taken to a local recycling plant where the aluminium is separated from the coffee residue. The aluminium is then sent to a scrap metal collector for re-melting into recycled aluminium, while the coffee grounds are taken to a local farm to be repurposed as natural compost. Rich in nitrogen, the Nespresso coffee grounds fertilise the soil to grow crops including high quality fruits and vegetables. Julian Chow, Senior Operations Manager at Food Angel commented: “Our continued collaboration with Nespresso is highly beneficial to local people in need, and we hope that our work can help raise awareness and encourage each of us to take small steps in our daily lives to consume more responsibly.”
The Nespresso capsule recycling system makes it as easy as possible for Club Members to return
their used capsules. Club Members can simply drop off their used capsules at any Nespresso
Boutique in Hong Kong or take advantage of the Recycling@Home service, a doorstep collection
system where used capsules are picked up when a new order is delivered.
In addition to the recycling program for in-home consumption, Nespresso Professional also has a
recycling scheme in place to enable professional corporate users including hotels, restaurants and
corporations in both Hong Kong and Macau to recycle their capsules.
